GET ORGANISED
Try not to leave anything until the last minute.
Book your movers and put together a “moving day” plan
COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR MOVERS
The Man & His Van’s team have many years of experience in moving your home or office, and really want your move to go as smoothly as possible.
Talk to us – tell us what you need and what you expect.
Make sure you fully understand what we offer and what you will need to do yourself
THIS IS THE PERFECT OPPORTUNITY TO CUT THE CLUTTER
Moving is a great chance to get rid of items you no longer use. There are many charities that will gladly accept donations, and in some cases even collect from you
PUT TOGETHER SOME “PACKING KITS”
Keep newspapers and buy some bubble wrap (generally available in a big roll). Invest in some black marking pens, rolls of packing tape and most of all – some good quality boxes, especially for the heavier items
Smaller boxes, when full, are lighter and easier to carry than boxes that are too big
REUSE BOXES THE BOXES YOU CAN AND RECYCLE WHAT YOU CAN’T
You might need to keep a few boxes for the first while after your move. Keep an eye on your local Facebook pages – there are often people looking for (or offering) moving boxes
MAKE AN INVENTORY OF WHAT IS IN THE BOXES
Put together a spreadsheet / make a list of the contents of each box. Then, give each box a number and all you have to do is write that number on each side along with which room the box belongs in
LABEL, LABEL, LABEL!
You may think you’ll remember what is packed into what box, but you won’t! Label all sides of the box (excluding the top). Label each side in black marker so you can easily find what you need in a stack.
FIND OUT YOUR ESTATE/COMPLEX RULES
Moving into an Estate or Complex isn’t always as easy as simply pulling up to your new front door and unloading your boxes. Be sure to check the “moving in” policy and what the rules are before scheduling your moving day.
PREPARE A “MOVING DAY KIT”
Keep one box with you to fill with essentials for moving day and take it with you in your vehicle –cleaning supplies, toilet paper, black bags, some toiletries and some tea/coffee/sugar (and a coffee mug or two) will all come in very useful
BE READY FOR WHEN YOUR MOVERS ARE SCHEDULED TO ARRIVE
Have everything packed and ready for when we arrive. Nothing will increase the stress of the day more than having Movers ready to pack the van and you are still packing boxes!
KEEP YOUR VALUABLES SAFE
Find a safe place to store your valuables on moving day and insure anything that’s valuable or breakable
NEW FURNITURE DELIVERIES
If you’ve ordered new furniture, schedule the delivery after moving day. You will need to focus on moving your existing belongings into your new home, without the added stress of having new items delivered
DON’T MISTAKE BELONGINGS FOR RUBBISH!
Try to avoid packing things in black garbage bags. When you’re tired and rushed, it can easily be mistaken for rubbish and thrown away by mistake
FIND A PET SITTER FOR THE DAY
If you have pets that could be traumatised by a move, consider hiring a pet sitter or booking them into kennels for a day
If you’re hiring movers for a long-distance move, be sure to arrange your pet’s safe transport to your new home.
